The inauguration of the Tren Maya has marked a turning point in Mexico's infrastructure. On December 15, 2023, after three years of hard work, the first section of the Mayan Train was inaugurated, covering 473 kilometers from Campeche to Cancun Airport.
During the inauguration ceremony, held at the San Francisco de Campeche station, the President, together with Governor Layda Sansores and other businessmen, unveiled the plaque that marks the beginning of this new era in transportation. Afterwards, they made the first official trip of the transport, starting in Merida.
The inauguration of the Maya train not only symbolizes an achievement in engineering and cooperation, but also a commitment to connect and revitalize the region.
The President acknowledged the work and commitment of the construction companies and the efforts of more than 10,000 workers who are making possible the construction of 1,554 kilometers of the Train, which will be completed on February 29, 2024.
With two daily departures scheduled at 7:00 am and 11:00 am from Campeche and Cancun simultaneously, the Tren Maya promises to be a key player in the tourism and economic development of the Mexican southeast. This phase extends the journey from Cancun, Quintana Roo, to Palenque, Chiapas, as part of the process to connect five southern states by rail.
This project, a symbol of progress, was celebrated by the president together with the governors of Quintana Roo and Campeche, as well as prominent cabinet members and business leaders. The initiative seeks to boost tourism and the regional economy.

He highlighted the President's fulfilled commitment, referring to the train as a symbol of social justice and prosperity in southeastern Mexico.
The maiden voyage of the Tren Maya departed Cancun at 06:40 AM local time and 05:40 AM in Mexico City. It will travel through 22 stations with a stop in San Francisco Campeche to refill supplies and fuel. During its journey, it will cross the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Campeche, Chiapas and Tabasco, connecting key regions along its route.
General Óscar Lozano, director of Tren Maya SA, shared in an exclusive interview the operational and fare details. Residents of the five beneficiary entities will have a special price of $1,199 pesos. Domestic travelers will have access for $2,123 pesos, while international tourists will enjoy the trip for $2,850 pesos. This pricing scheme seeks to balance accessibility and value, ensuring a unique experience aboard the Tren Maya.
Which stations are already operating and which are yet to open?
As of January 1, 2024, the inauguration of the Tren Maya, the Cancun-Palenque section, integrated new stations to the service:

- Carrillo Puerto
- Escarcega
- Candelaria
- El Triunfo
- Tenosique
- Boca del Cerro
- Palenque
These join those active since December 16 with the inauguration of the first stage of the Mayan Train:

- Maxcanú
- Uman
- Merida Teya
- Tixkokob
- Izamal
- Chichen Itza
- Valladolid

By the end of February 2024, the network will be completed, including stations from Puerto Morelos to Centenario. With this, the Tren Maya promises total coverage and an unprecedented boost for southeastern Mexico.
