Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Tulum is a great place to spend a great summer vacation. During your stay, you'll have plenty to do, from exploring the Mayan archaeological site of Tulum and the nearby Xel-Ha water park, to snorkeling in Akumal.
The Riviera Maya is a tourist attraction, famous for its beaches and archaeological sites, but also famous for its many natural wells. These are fresh water and sacred to the Mayans. Today, they provide a different way to spend a relaxing day in the area. Below, we list some of the most popular cenotes in Tulum.
A trip to Cenote Dos Ojos is the perfect way to have an unforgettable diving experience. It is located north of Tulum, and its name refers to the two mouths of this cenote, connected by a large cave. This underwater cave system is one of the longest cave systems in the world, with crystal clear waters and impressive caves, called "Cenote Pit", which is almost 121 meters deep. This cenote also has another interesting cave with a large number of bats.
This is a beautiful flooded cave, which was explored in 1987 and is still being studied today. More than 67 kilometers of subway passages have been discovered, with a maximum depth of approximately 120 meters.
It is very suitable for diving and snorkeling. Due to the transparency of the water, visibility is very good. Both diving and guided snorkeling excursions can reach the Cueva de los Murcielagos.
This spectacular cenote is located just a few kilometers from Tulum and is one of the most famous cenotes in the area. This almost perfect circular cenote is ideal for snorkeling and diving, there are wonderful stalagmites and stalactites, as well as fresh and clear water. With lots of natural light and a depth of approximately 9 meters, swimming in this cenote is truly unforgettable and not to be missed on your next Tulum vacation.
Despite its skull-like shape, there is nothing dangerous or ominous about this beautiful natural sinkhole. Instead, the name comes from the three holes on the surface, which are the eyes, nose and mouth of the skull. Calavera Cenote is deeper than the rest of the area and is ideal for snorkeling. You can also get there by bike from Tulum, it is not as crowded as others in the area.
This cenote is a bit off the popular scenes, which means you will find fewer tourists. Unlike other cenotes in the area, Cenote Nicte-Há is mainly on the surface, but it is also one of the most amazing natural places where you can swim. In this area you can see the rocky overhangs, the water is crystal clear and very clean, with beautiful lilies and other plants floating in the water.
A very unusual name, isn't it? This Cenote is known by the name of Carwash because a few meters from that place (before the cenote was discovered) there was a car wash. But its real name is Aktun Ha. The snorkeling area is about 5 meters deep, while the cave (only authorized divers can enter) is up to 15 meters deep. This cenote is connected to the Zacil Ha cenote through the cave.
It has a platform that allows children and adults to enjoy the fun of jumping into the water.
During the summer months, a layer of different layers of algae invaded and the bottom of the cenote turned green. It is very common to see water turtles and fish. Using the snorkel, you can easily see the formation of beautiful and large stalactites. You can see trees and aquatic plants sinking, which makes it even more fascinating. The light passing through the algae layer creates unprecedented events and forms different shades, there is no doubt that this is a place you must see.
Important note: In order not to affect the habitat in the cenotes, it is very important not to use face cream or sunscreen before entering the water. It doesn't matter if they are biodegradable (although all are biodegradable of course) they do the same damage to the habitat.
Remember not to bring anything you find in cenotes. Let's help each other and do responsible tourism.
Don't you think they are incredible? Don't miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful paradise of cenotes.
