The president traveled to Quintana Roo to open the doors of the airport in Tulum. Although five years of his presidency will be commemorated this Friday, on this occasion, he chose not to give an exclusive message about his achievements and challenges. Instead, he incorporated accountability in his inaugural speech, highlighting the participation of the Armed Forces in the realization of this emblematic work.
After 536 days of construction and an investment of 16 billion pesos, the Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, located in the Mexican Caribbean, opened its doors this Friday, December 1, 2023.
The Chairman Andrés Manuel López Obrador chose to celebrate the beginning of his sixth year in office with the inauguration of this emblematic project. He highlighted the military work and mentioned other notable works, such as the Mayan Train. He was joined at the opening by prominent businessmen such as Carlos Slim of Grupo Carso, Daniel Chávez of Grupo Vidanta, and Guadalupe Phillips Margain, CEO of ICA.
"This work allows us to remember that today we are celebrating five years of government. This beautiful Felipe Carrillo Puerto airport in Tulum, Quintana Roo, is proof of what we have accomplished with the support of many public servants. Women and men, civilians and military, of course, with the support and participation of our people," said the President at the beginning of his speech.

Finally, on Friday, December 1st at 1:15 p.m., the runways of the new airport in Tulum received its first Viva Aerobus flight from Felipe Angeles, State of Mexico. It carried 160 passengers and was greeted with a water arch as part of the first-come, first-served tradition.
The Mexican airline will connect Tulum with domestic destinations, including Mexico City, Estado de Mexico and Monterrey. Soon, Guadalajara and Tijuana will be added to the routes. Aeromexico will offer daily flights and in addition, as of March 28, 2024, international airlines such as United Airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines and Spirit will begin operations.
Simultaneously, construction of the Tren Maya station, known as "Aeropuerto Tulum", is progressing. Financed with resources from another investment source, the station will be connected to the passenger terminal through existing tracks.
A 7-kilometer, 10-minute round-trip shuttle service will be offered, complemented by a Mayan sascab trail. Mainly for pedestrians, bicycles and electric cars, it will cover 2.6 kilometers and will require 15 to 25 minutes to travel.
He highlighted the remarkable growth of the southeast, doubling the expansion of the north of the country. This progress is largely attributed to public investment channeled into key projects such as the construction of the airport in Tulum and the implementation of the Mayan Train.
"Something that has not happened in decades, this phenomenon is closely related to the increase in public investment, what happened in these five years? From 500,000 million pesos to one trillion pesos, and it was the states of the southeast that benefited the most", he pointed out.
Tulum emerges as the third most outstanding destination, receiving 1.7 million visitors annually, following Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It is expected that the new airport in Tulum, which will have a connection with the Mayan Train, anticipates an exponential leap in capacity, expecting to serve 5 million users annually.
During the recent summer vacation, Carrillo Puerto experienced a 9.7% increase in visitors. Meanwhile, real estate developments in the airport's perimeter zone rapidly increased their capital gains.
