Also known as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS), it is a coral reef that extends along the Caribbean coast and passes through Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
It is the largest coral reef located in the western hemisphere and its extension places it after the Great Barrier Reef, which is located in Australia.
This second largest barrier reef in the world is a component of several ecosystems, including mangroves, lagoons and coastal wetlands. Each of these elements is important to the preservation of the whole. Mangroves act as buffers and help prevent land-based pollution from entering the ocean. They can also be used as nurseries for coral reef fish, as well as for feeding various marine species.
This ecosystem faces many threats, some are natural, such as tropical storms, and others are caused by human activities, such as overfishing and pollution.
SAM is known for its abundance of mollusks, mammals, algae, more than 500 species of fish and 65 species of corals. Some species that inhabit these coral reefs are endangered, such as green sea turtles, hawksbill and red sea turtles, as well as manatees, or are listed as endangered species, such as the whale shark.
One of the largest coral reefs in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, also known as the Mesoamerican Reef or Great Mayan Reef, extends from Canto Island and the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to the Gulf Islands. In Honduras, it extends for more than 600 miles. The coral reef system includes several protected areas and parks, including Cozumel Reefs National Park, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Xcalak Reefs National Park and Cayos Cochinos Marine Park.
The Great Barrier Reef of Central America is located off the coast of Cancun, Riviera Maya and Costa Maya, making it a prime destination for those interested in scuba diving and snorkeling during their vacation.
The Belize Barrier Reef Protected Area Network was added to the World Heritage List in 1996 due to its excellent natural system, but became part of the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2009 "due to the destruction of mangroves and ecosystems. The ocean, oil extraction are in the sea and the development of unsustainable construction projects".
You can reach these areas by plane or by sea. After arriving at the island, you have the opportunity to participate in various activities, such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Snorkeling in Isla Mujeres is an ideal activity for the whole family, because you can not only have a great time, but also get to know the rich biodiversity of the Caribbean. Turtles and starfish on the beach are just a small part of what you can see while snorkeling in Isla Mujeres.
Millions of tourists come to the area every year and have the opportunity to dive in secluded spots, swim with the most concentrated whale sharks on the planet and relax on the spectacular beaches.
Coral reefs are considered one of the most complex, vital and beautiful systems on the planet.
They provide food and shelter to more than 25% of marine life, and their function is vital, not only for the species that live in coral reefs, but also for humans. Because of their existence we have obtained enormous benefits, such as:
The MAR not only represents a unique biodiversity worth protecting, but also provides ecosystem services that are vital to the community. More than 2 million people depend directly on the marine resources of the MAR for their survival. Coral reefs have ecosystem functions that are vital to coastal communities, such as coastal protection during major storms, support for commercial and local fisheries, local consumption and tourism.
Over the years, for various reasons, protection of the Mesoamerican Reef system has continued. Some have become part of global pollution, such as rising water temperatures, while others are part of human predation, as well as tourist incursions into the area during the last few decades.
Faced with this reality, some campaigns have been carried out to raise awareness and save the second largest coral reef in the world, because the area and the underwater creatures are a very important ecosystem.
One of the most ambitious projects is the Cancun Museum of Underwater Art (MUSA), which acts as an artificial coral reef through sculptures that promote the generation of coral reefs and marine life. Have you ever seen an underwater museum before? And what better than to know the reason for its existence, to conserve and generate more marine life. We invite you to know more incredible and curious places in Mexico.
Tour the different sites and perform activities such as diving, snorkeling, boat rides and visit the islands within the area of the second largest barrier reef in the world.
Remember to follow the relevant instructions to safeguard the coral reef. Make sure you make a trip that guarantees your safety and gives you all the tips to keep the coral reef alive and clean, such as not touching fish and corals and using biodegradable sunscreen.
